Confidence in the Cross
Bob Dylan

A reflective and poetic exploration of the themes of justice, morality, and the consequences of our actions. Through a narrative that critiques societal norms and laws, this song delves into the complex nature of good and evil, as seen through the life and death of Jesus Christ. Each line invites the listener to ponder the true meaning of justice and freedom.

When Jesus Christ came on earth,
you killed him, nailed him on a cross.
You thought he was dead,
but you were mistaken,
floating in a sea of human loss.

How can we have confidence,
when justice wears a mask so thin?
Nobody can serve the truth to any man,
without his motives buried deep within.

Set aside the reason, and history fades,
Jesus a name, a legend, a man who's lost
in the echoes of the law's harsh blades,
creating noise, disturbance — at what cost?

Dangerous personality, they said,
yet whose hand raised the sword, who drew the line?
If laws don’t see what lies in hearts,
can peace emerge, or is that just a design?

Mixing arsenic in the flour may not kill
if its purpose is to rid the homestead of rats,
but aim at a soul, and you shatter the will,
murder in silence, where justice sits flat.

Therefore, abolish the laws of convenience,
the ones that twist reason, turn dark into light,
the sword of revolution worn, sharpened bright,
it’s the ideas of hope that fuel the nighttime fight.

Any nation that preys on the weak,
loses the claim to be truly free,
Yet imprisonment can’t shackle the soul,
the ultimate victory, it will one day see.

An explosion was heard, with scratches of pain,
as a few feel the hurt, and the weight of the chains,
in the ruins of war, they find their heritage plain,
rising from chaos, as the old man explains.

Don’t execute a private citizen for intent,
a slip of the hand or slightly undermined,
how can we hold such confidence,
when justice is blind to the truth it might find?

About "Confidence in the Cross"
  • Song Idea:

Make this poem rhyme. You should have an innovative and non-traditional song structure. Chorusless. "When Jesus Christ came on earth, you killed him and nailed him on a cross. You thought he was dead, but you were mistaken.

    How can we have confidence?

Nobody can do justice to anybody without taking motive into consideration.

If we set aside the motive, then Jesus Christ will appear to be a man responsible for creating disturbances, breaking peace and preaching revolt, and will be considered to be a "dangerous personality" in the language of the law. But we worship him.

If the law does not see the motive there can be no justice, nor can there be stable peace.

Mixing of arsenic (poison) in the flour will not be considered to be a crime, provided its purpose is to kill rats. But if the purpose is to kill a man, it becomes a crime of murder.

Therefore, such laws which do not stand the test of reason and which are against the principle of justice, should be abolished. The sword of revolution is sharpened on the whetting-stone of ideas. This is what we wanted to emphasize.

Any nation which can do to the weak and disadvantaged, loses a claim to independence and to freedom from outside influence. But imprisonment cannot stop the ultimate victory.

There has been an explosion. As a result of this explosion, a few persons received minor scratches.

But in the soul, they finally received, by the devastation of their war filled land, their ultimate heritage.

Do not execute a private citizen for slightly undermining the constitution.

How can we have that confidence?"
