In 'City Lights', Drake and Polo G reflect on their journey from small towns to vibrant cities. The song explores the contrast between wealth and poverty, shedding light on the harsh realities of social status and the lessons learned while growing up in a fast-paced environment. With powerful lyrics and emotional depth, they capture the essence of finding one's place in a complex world.
Verse 1 - Drake:
I packed my bags, left the hometown behind,
Dreams of the skyline, got a vision in my mind.
From fields to concrete, yeah, I made that switch,
Unseen struggles, life’s a rollercoaster, what a pitch.
Chorus:
City lights shining bright, but I see the shadows too,
Riches all around me, but poverty's in view.
Glimmers of the good life, but it’s a façade,
Learnin’ from the streets, reality hit hard.
Verse 2 - Polo G:
Back in the days, we used to dream of this ride,
But no one told me about the pain that’s inside.
Everyone my age flaunting diamonds and gold,
While I was hustling, fighting battles untold.
Chorus:
City lights shining bright, but I see the shadows too,
Riches all around me, but poverty's in view.
Glimmers of the good life, but it’s a façade,
Learnin’ from the streets, reality hit hard.
Bridge:
Status and wealth, they decide your worth,
I learned young, life’s tough, not just a mirth.
Had to grind, had to hustle, make my own way,
In a world of extremes, that’s the price you pay.
Verse 3 - Drake:
I see a kid on the corner, eyes full of dreams,
While dollars in suits play with selfish schemes.
I’ll never lose sight of the lessons I learned,
In this city of highs, where the heart gets burned.
Chorus:
City lights shining bright, but I see the shadows too,
Riches all around me, but poverty's in view.
Glimmers of the good life, but it’s a façade,
Learnin’ from the streets, reality hit hard.
Outro:
So here’s to the struggle, the city, the pain,
Through all of the storms, still I dance in the rain.
From small town dreams to big city sights,
I’m building my future under these city lights.

Moving to the city from a small town changed my perspective on how big the world is. It was the first time I had ever seen so much poverty and so many riches in the same place. As a young man, I learned quickly how broken the world is. I learned that how you are treated is based on status and wealth. Everyone my age around me was already rich. I had to work for everything I had to get.
